4. Participate actively in a mock rehearsal.
#### Materials Needed:
- Script excerpts
- Character description sheets
- Casting forms

- Name tags
- Open space for rehearsal
#### Lesson Outline:
**Introduction (10 minutes)**
1. **Greeting and Settling Down**
- Welcome students and take attendance.
- Introduce the day's topic: Casting and Rehearsal.
2. **Discussion**
- Ask students if they know what "casting" and "rehearsal" mean.
- Explain casting as the process of selecting actors for roles and rehearsal as practicing the performance before the actual event.
- Briefly discuss why both are essential in the performing arts.
**Activity 1: Understanding Casting (20 minutes)**
1. **Explanation**
- Explain the casting process: reading scripts, auditions, and selecting the right actors for each role.
- Discuss the role of a casting director and the criteria they might use (e.g., physical appearance, acting skills, suitability for the role).
2. **Group Activity: Mock Casting**
- Divide students into small groups.
- Provide each group with a script excerpt and character descriptions.
- Assign roles within each group:
- 1 or 2 as casting directors
- The others as actors auditioning for roles.
- Each actor will read lines for a character, and the casting directors will decide who fits each role best.
3. **Reflection**
- Discuss as a class how casting directors made their decisions.
- Ask students how they felt about the process – both as actors and directors.
**Activity 2: Rehearsal (25 minutes)**
1. **Explanation**
- Introduce the concept of rehearsal – practicing the script and actions until the performance is polished.
- Discuss the objectives of rehearsals: learning lines, blocking movements, understanding characters, and developing timing and interactions.
2. **Group Rehearsal**
- Use the same groups as in the casting activity.
- Allow students to rehearse their script excerpts. Emphasize that this is about practice and improvement, not perfection.
- Walk around the room to observe and assist groups, ensuring all students are engaged in the activity.
**Conclusion (5 minutes)**
1. **Sharing Experience**
- Invite each group to briefly perform their rehearsed script for the class.
- Provide positive feedback and encourage peer feedback.
2. **Debrief and Wrap-Up**
- Summarize the main points about casting and rehearsal.
- Ask a few students to share what they found most interesting or challenging.
- Emphasize the importance of practice and teamwork in the performing arts.
**Homework/Follow-Up Activity:**
- Assign students to think about a story or scene they would like to act out. They should bring ideas for next class where they could practice more in-depth casting and rehearsals.
**Assessment:**
- Observe student participation and engagement during activities.
- Evaluate their understanding through the discussion and their ability to practically apply casting and rehearsal concepts.
